With a new restaurant coming on the market in Queensland, the name of the state’s royal restaurant is now being debated.
The Royal Victoria Palace has a long history in the state and was originally named ‘Royal Victoria Palace’.

In the 1930s, Queenslanders formed the Papi Ranchers Association to combat the discrimination of Pāpoi people.
In 1989, the Association passed a resolution which called for the name to be changed, but was unsuccessful in doing so.

“It’s a huge concern for the tribe, because PāPapa means ‘pizza’,” said Pajapakas Grand Chief, Kiko Nambu.
“For them, Pajaka means ‘we’re all in this together’, and that is very important for the people.”
It is also important for Papi to be recognised as an Aboriginal restaurant, because it has a history with Aboriginal people in the area.
“When we first came to Papi we were living in the hills and we weren’t going anywhere,” Nambuu said.
“But when the Pãpeas came, they told us they wanted to be the first restaurant in the world to serve Papi.

“They didn’t come here to make money but they came here to live, so they have a very strong relationship to the Papeas,” Nammu said.
Nambukas Grand Chairman, Kiki Nambui, said the name “was chosen for that very reason, because when we first arrived, we didn’t have the same knowledge about Papi.”
